Louis Armstrong – Mack The Knife $10.98 Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Trummy Young (vocals, trombone); Edmund Hall (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Squire Gersh (bass); Barrett Deems (drums).Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 4, 1957. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance.Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).Recorded in 1957, exactly 11 months after the excellent live recordings that comprise THE GREAT CHICAGO CONCERT, MACK THE KNIFE is another fun show from the same band, the second version of Louis`s "All Stars." The occasion of this recording was a special July 4th Newport Jazz Festival show in celebration of Satchmo`s birthday. According to contemporary reports, however, the party took a strange turn when a pre-show argument over the concert`s line-up somehow led to a buck naked Louis screaming at promoters in the middle of the backstage area.If there were any lingering feelings of hostility when Pops hit the stage, though, they aren`t noticeable here. In fact, the only thing out of the ordinary is Louis` playing, which is better than ever. Blowing like a man half his age, Armstrong`s tone is clear as a bell, his phrasing dead-on and his energy seemingly boundless. The rest of the band follows suit admirably, with trombonist Trummy Young playing the consummate straight man to both Louis` jokes and his extraordinary trumpet chops. MACK THE KNIFE is a near-perfect example of Louis and the All Stars at their peak, and an immensely enjoyable record for serious jazzbos and casual listeners alike. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Too Short – Born to Mack [PA] $8.99 Personnel: Todd "Too Short" Shaw (rap vocals, keyboards), Silky C (programming), D.J. Universe (scratches).Audio Mixers: Too Short; Howard Johnston.Recording information: Different Fur Recording.Unknown Contributor Roles: T. Bohanon; Johnny Hodges.Arranger: Too Short.By the time Jive Records released Born to Mack, Too Short`s major-label debut, the young rapper was already a music industry veteran, having released several albums on the independent 75 Girls label. With Born to Mack Too Short continued the formula that had already made him a regional star — sexually explicit lyrics over sparse, bass-heavy rhythm tracks. What is missing from this album, though, is any levity, humor, or musical exploration. Without the benefit of a lyrical wink or nod, and without any sign of his future head-nodding, funk workouts, Too Short`s trademark "pimp" tales were stripped bare, revealing themselves too misogynist to be enjoyable. Even so, due to the success of the nearly ten-minute, underground smash "Freaky Tales," Born to Mack expanded Too Short`s fan base past his Oakland, CA, hometown, eventually selling past gold status. Many of Short`s later efforts, such as Life Is…Too Short and Shorty the Pimp were funnier, funkier, and plain better, but Born to Mack stands as most of the world`s introduction to one of rap`s most enduring, and best-selling, artists ever. ~ Mtume Salaam Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Testament of Gideon Mack $14.7 At an early age Gideon Mack abandons his faith in God, but that doesn`t stop him from following in his father`s footsteps and becoming a Presbyterian minister. When he falls into a ravine and is swept away by the river, he is presumed dead until he miraculously returns with disturbing news: he claims to have been saved by the devil. He`s reviled and excommunicated, and then he disappears. Months later Mack`s body is found in the mountains with his sacrilegious testament, and it is this fictional document that comprises the bulk of James Robertson`s sly and provocative U.S. debut, a novel that presents one of the most personable and sympathetic visions of Satan since PARADISE LOST. |

Bobby Darin – Mack The Knife $7.98 Among the piles and piles of anthologies, collections, and greatest-hit packages assembled of Bobby Darin, most use the same familiar standards which Darin was known for ("Mack the Knife," "Splish Splash," and "Beyond the Sea") and throw together a few other numbers for good measure on Collectables Mack the Knife. However, the omission of "Dream Lover" makes this disc inferior to others available. The rest of the disc contains a few fan favorites and reinterpretations of classic pop standards. Not exactly the most comprehensive overview of Darin`s career, but you could do far worse with some of the other budget-line compilations currently available. ~ Rob Theakston Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. From the blazing fretboard work on "Camp Washington Chili" to the sing along rocking goofiness of "Buffalo Women" to the calming stillness of "A Song I Haven`t Sung, " this remains one of Mack`s finest studio efforts. ~ Cub Koda Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Lonnie Mack – Memphis Wham! $17.96 Contains the Fraternity LP THE WHAM OF THE MEMPHIS MAN (1963) plus 13 rare singles and unreleased tracks.Personnel includes: Lonnie Mack (guitar).Compilation producers: John Broven, Bill Millar.Includes liner notes by Bill Millar. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Photographer: Rein Wisse. At first glance, this might seem like nothing more than a retread of the classic The Wham of That Memphis Man, as the disc includes all 14 songs from that album. This is a quality upgrade/supplement to that record, though, adding 11 more tracks of 1963-1967 vintage from both rare singles and previously unreleased outtakes. This is hardly filler that only collectors will care about; it`s good stuff, sometimes ace stuff, that`s almost all on the same level of The Wham. "Oh, I Apologize," a cover of an obscure Barrett Strong track, is white soul singing on par with Mack`s best vocal efforts, while "Cry, Cry, Cry" is a great instrumental version of a Bobby "Blue" Bland number; both of these cuts, unbelievably, were not released prior to this CD. The singles "Say Something Nice to Me" and "Save Your Money" (from 1964 and 1967) are more filet of white soul, and "Tension Pts. 1 & 2" (a 1966 single) another cool roadhouse instrumental. Some of the rare add-ons are less essential than others (like the instrumental reading of the Beatles` "From Me to You"), but taken together it`s certainly the best Mack collection, enhanced by Bill Millar`s informative liner notes. By the way, in one of those inexplicable occurrences bound to cause collectors to run around in circles, the song titled "Farther on Down the Road" on The Wham of That Memphis Man recording is here titled "Farther on up the Road" and listed as previously unreleased, although in fact it seems to be the same track as the one given a different title on the LP. (To cause further confusion, Mack definitely sings the lyric "Farther on up the road, " not "Farther on down the road, " as it was originally titled.) ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Willie Hutch – The Mack $8.97 Original score composed by Willie Hutch.Reissue producers: Robert Margouleff, Brant Biles.Originally released on Motown (766).All tracks have been digitally remastered. When an act called Sisters Love were offered a cameo in the blaxploitation film The Mack, their manager suggested that Willie Hutch do the soundtrack. It came to be one of the great `70s film scores, including a pair of classic funk tunes, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" and the title cut. The results proved to be another soundtrack that far surpassed the quality of its film. ~ Ron Wynn Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
